General Dental Council

The organisation that regulates dental professionals in the UK, and investigates serious concerns about the ability, health or behaviour of dental professionals.

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)

An independent charity dedicated to improving oral health in the UK and around the world.

British Dental Association (BDA)

The professional association and trade union for dentists in the UK.

Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) 

A registered charity dedicated to providing the profession with continuing implant education and the public with a greater understanding of dental implants.

Trading Standards Institute

A professional membership association which represents trading standards professionals in the UK and overseas - in local authorities, the business and consumer sectors and in central government.

If you have a complaint about NHS dental services, you can contact the NHS to complain.

There are four regulators which set standards for dental providers and can look into whether these are being met.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulates all primary dental care services in England - both private and NHS. The CQC cannot investigate individual complaints, but its inspectors use information when they inspect services to make sure that they are meeting quality and safety standards.

The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority is Northern Ireland's independent health and social care regulator. RQIA investigates private dental care and treatment in Northern Ireland. RQIA cannot investigate individual complaints, but its inspectors use information when they inspect services to make sure that they are meeting quality and safety standards.

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) is the independent inspectorate and regulator of all healthcare in Wales.

Healthcare Improvement Scotland  (HIS) has responsibility for the regulation of independent healthcare services in Scotland, previously the responsibility of the Care Commission. HIS can only investigate cases of private treatment; for complaints about dental treatment provided in an NHS setting, contact your local NHS Scotland health board.

Information Commissioner's Office

The UK’s independent authority set up to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals.​ The ICO will assist with matters such as obtaining your dental records.
